A. Meaning of Computer Software
Computer software refers to a set of programs, instructions and related data that tells a computer what to do and how to perform specific tasks.
Software cannot normally be physically touched. It works together with computer hardware to make the computer system useful.
For example, when a user wants to type a document, software such as a word processor provides the instructions and tools needed to create and edit the document.
Examples of Software: Windows, Linux, Android, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Web browsers, Media players, Antivirus programs and Graphics programs
B. Types of Computer Software
Computer software can broadly be divided into:
1. System software
2. Application software
There are also special-purpose categories such as utility software, which supports the maintenance and efficient operation of a computer system.
1. System Software
System software is software designed to control and manage computer hardware and provide a platform on which application software can run.
It operates mainly in the background and helps the computer system function properly.
Examples: Operating systems, Device drivers, Firmware and System utilities
Operating System
An Operating System (OS) is system software that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer and provides an interface through which users interact with the computer.
Examples of Operating Systems: Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iOS
Functions of an Operating System
i. Memory Management
The operating system manages the computer’s memory and allocates memory to programs when required.
ii. File Management
It helps users create, save, organize, rename, copy and delete files and folders.

It is commonly stored in non-volatile memory so that it remains available when power is removed.
Examples
Firmware can be found in:
*Routers
*Printers
*Digital cameras
*Computer motherboards
*Smartphones
*Other electronic devices
Firmware helps a device perform its basic functions and start or initialize its hardware.

*File management tools
*System diagnostic tools
Functions of Utility Software
Utility software can be used to:
Detect and remove malware.
Back up important files.
Compress files.
Manage storage.
Identify system problems.
Improve system maintenance.
Organize files and folders.
2. Application Software
Application software is software designed to help users perform particular tasks.
Unlike system software, which manages the computer system, application software is mainly used directly by users to accomplish specific activities.
Examples: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Web browsers, Media players, Graphics applications and educational applications
Types of Application Software
i. Word Processing Software
Word processing software is used to create, edit, format, save and print text documents.

Examples: Microsoft Excel and LibreOffice Calc
Uses
It can be used for:
*Calculations
*Preparing budgets
*Creating tables
*Producing charts
*Analyzing data
*Keeping records
iii. Presentation Software
Presentation software is used to create slides for presenting information to an audience.
Examples: Microsoft PowerPoint and LibreOffice Impress
Uses
It can be used for:
*Classroom presentations
*Business presentations
*Seminars
*Project presentations
*Educational materials
iv. Database Software
Database software is used to create, organize, store, retrieve and manage large amounts of structured information.
Uses
It can be used to manage:
*Student records
*Customer information
*Employee records
*Inventory
