Lesson Note
A. MEANING
Technology is the application of scientific knowledge, skills, tools, machines and techniques to solve problems and make human activities easier, faster and more efficient.
Technology can be found in almost every area of human life. Examples include machines used in agriculture, medical equipment, transportation systems, communication devices and computers.
B. Meaning of Digital Technology
Digital technology refers to electronic tools, devices, systems and applications that use digital information, usually represented in the form of binary digits (0 and 1), to create, store, process, transmit and retrieve information.
In simple terms, digital technology is technology that uses electronic systems to handle information in digital form.
Examples include computers, smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, smart televisions, ATMs, digital watches, printers, GPS devices, internet services and cloud storage systems
C. Meaning of Digital
The word digital refers to information or technology that represents and processes information using discrete values. Computers commonly use two binary values:
0 — Off/low
1 — On/high
These two values are called binary digits or bits.
For example, text, pictures, music and videos can all be converted into digital data so that electronic devices can process and store them.
D. Examples of Digital Technology
1. Computers
Computers are electronic devices that receive data, process it, store it and produce useful information.
Uses: typing documents, calculations, education, programming, research and communication.
2. Smartphones
Smartphones are mobile digital devices that combine communication, computing, Internet access and many other functions.
Uses: calls, messaging, photography, online learning, browsing and accessing applications.
3. Tablets
Tablets are portable touchscreen computers.
Uses: reading, learning, watching educational materials, browsing the Internet and running applications.
4. Digital Cameras
Digital cameras capture photographs and videos electronically and store them as digital files.
5. Smart Television
A smart TV can connect to the Internet and run digital applications in addition to displaying television programmes.
6. ATMs
Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) use digital technology to provide banking services such as cash withdrawal, balance checking and other transactions.
7. Internet
The Internet is a worldwide network of interconnected computer networks that allows people and devices to exchange information and communicate.
E. Importance of Digital Technology
Digital technology is important because it has transformed how people work, learn, communicate and conduct business.
1. Communication
Digital technology makes communication faster and easier through Email, Instant messaging, Video calls and social networking platforms
2. Education
Students and teachers can use computers, smartphones and the Internet for online learning
Research, digital textbooks, educational videos, computer-based tests
3. Business
Businesses use digital technology for record keeping, online marketing, electronic payments customer communication and stock management
4. Banking
Digital technology allows customers to access banking services through ATMs, mobile banking, internet banking and electronic payments
5. Healthcare
Hospitals use digital technology for keeping patient records, medical imaging, communication, laboratory analysis and monitoring patients
6. Agriculture
Farmers can use digital technology for weather information, farm management, market information, modern irrigation systems and monitoring crops and livestock
7. Transportation
Digital systems are used in GPS navigation, traffic management, electronic ticketing, vehicle monitoring and online transport booking
8. Entertainment
Digital technology provides digital music, movies, video games, streaming services and digital photography
F. Digital Technology in Everyday Life
Digital technology is part of everyday activities. A person may use digital technology when:
*Waking up with a digital alarm.
*Using a smartphone to communicate.
*Searching for information online.
*Using an ATM.
*Paying for goods electronically.
*Watching television.
*Taking photographs.
*Using GPS to find a location.
*Attending an online class.
*Sending an email.
G. Digital Technology and Non-Digital Technology
1. Digital Technology
Digital technology processes information electronically in digital form.
Examples: Smartphone, Computer, Digital camera, Tablet, Smartwatch
2. Non-Digital Technology
Traditional or analogue technologies may represent information continuously or operate without digital processing.
Examples: Traditional mechanical clock, Printed book, Paper map, Mercury thermometer
Differences
Digital Technology Non-Digital Technology
Uses digital information Often uses physical or analogue information
Can process large amounts of data quickly Usually has more limited data-processing capability
Information can easily be stored electronically Information may be stored physically
Often supports automatic processing Often requires more manual operation
Examples include smartphones and computers Examples include paper maps and
mechanical clocks
H. Advantages of Digital Technology
Fast communication: Information can be transmitted quickly.
Easy access to information: Users can obtain information through digital devices and networks.
Large storage capacity: Digital devices can store large amounts of information.
Improved productivity: Many repetitive tasks can be automated.
Better education: Digital resources provide additional learning opportunities.
Easy information sharing: Files and information can be shared electronically.
Improved business operations: Digital systems help businesses manage information and transactions.
Convenience: Many services can be accessed without physically visiting an office.
I. Disadvantages of Digital Technology
Cybersecurity risks: Digital systems may be attacked by cybercriminals.
Privacy concerns: Personal information may be exposed or misused.
Addiction and excessive use: Excessive use of digital devices can interfere with schoolwork and other activities.
Job displacement: Automation can reduce the need for some types of manual work.
Spread of false information: Incorrect information can be shared rapidly online.
Cost: Some digital devices and services can be expensive.
Technical problems: Devices may malfunction or become damaged.
Digital divide: Not everyone has equal access to digital devices and reliable Internet services.
