A. Introduction

Alhaji Umar Tall was a prominent Muslim scholar, military leader and reformer in West Africa during the 19th century. He was also known as Omar Saidou Tall or El Hadj Umar Tall. He became an important leader of the Tijaniyya Islamic brotherhood and launched a jihad that led to the establishment and expansion of the Tukulor Empire in parts of present-day Senegal, Mali and Guinea.

B. Background of Alhaji Umar Tall

Alhaji Umar Tall was born around 1794 in Futa Toro, in present-day Senegal. He belonged to the Tukulor people and received Islamic education from an early age.

He travelled widely in West Africa and eventually made a pilgrimage to Mecca. During his travels, he came into contact with the Tijaniyya brotherhood and became one of its important leaders.

On returning to West Africa, Umar Tall began preaching Islam and calling for religious reform. He later used military force to establish an Islamic state.

The Tijaniyya Brotherhood

The Tijaniyya was an Islamic Sufi brotherhood founded by Ahmad al-Tijani in North Africa in the late 18th century.

The movement spread to West Africa and attracted many followers. Umar Tall became a major representative of the brotherhood.

Main Features of the Tijaniyya:

1. It promoted strict adherence to Islamic teachings.

2. It encouraged regular prayer and remembrance of Allah.

3. It emphasized Islamic education and scholarship.

4. It sought to strengthen the Muslim community.

5. It spread through scholars, teachers and religious networks.

6. It became an important source of religious and political influence in West Africa.

Causes of Umar Tall’s Jihad

Several factors contributed to the jihad launched by Umar Tall.

1. Desire to spread Islam

Umar Tall wanted to spread Islam and establish Islamic political authority in areas where he believed Islamic practices were weak.

2. Religious reform

He sought to reform Muslim societies and encourage people to follow Islamic teachings more strictly.

3. Political expansion

The jihad also provided an opportunity to establish a large Islamic state under his leadership.

4. Influence of the Tijaniyya

His position as a leading Tijaniyya scholar gave him religious authority and attracted many followers.

5. Military strength

Umar Tall gathered a large number of followers and soldiers, which enabled him to challenge existing kingdoms.

Course of Umar Tall’s Jihad

After returning from his pilgrimage and travels, Umar Tall established himself as a religious leader in West Africa.

He first gained a large following in Futa Toro and surrounding areas. He later moved eastwards and began military campaigns against several states.

Conquest of Segu

One of Umar Tall’s major achievements was the defeat of the Bambara state of Segu in 1861. Segu became the centre of his expanding empire.

Conquest of Hamdallahi

Umar Tall also fought against the Fulah-led Massina Empire, whose capital was Hamdallahi. After prolonged conflict, Hamdallahi was captured in 1862.

The conquest of Massina was important because it brought a large area under Umar Tall’s control.

Conflict with the French

Umar Tall’s expansion brought him into conflict with the growing French colonial presence in West Africa.

The French were expanding their influence from Senegal into the interior. This created rivalry between Umar Tall’s forces and the French.

Establishment of the Tukulor Empire

The territories conquered by Umar Tall formed the foundation of the Tukulor Empire.

The empire covered large parts of present-day Mali and Senegal, with influence extending into neighbouring areas.

Segu became an important political centre of the empire.

The empire was administered through a combination of Islamic institutions, military officials and local authorities.

Features of the Tukulor Empire

1. Islamic government: Islamic principles played an important role in administration.

2. Central authority: Umar Tall exercised strong political and religious authority.

3. Military organization: The empire depended heavily on its army for expansion and defence.

Islamic education: Islamic scholars and teachers played important roles.

4. Taxation: Taxes and tribute were collected from subject territories.

5. Emirates and local administration: Conquered areas were often administered through appointed officials and existing local structures.

6. Expansionist policy: The empire continued to expand through military campaigns.

Death of Alhaji Umar Tall

Umar Tall died in 1864 at Bandiagara in present-day Mali.

After his death, his son Ahmadu Sekou succeeded him and continued to rule much of the Tukulor Empire.

However, the empire later faced internal difficulties and increasing pressure from the French. The French eventually conquered major parts of the empire towards the end of the 19th century.

Importance of Umar Tall’s Jihad

The jihad had several important consequences:

1. Expansion of Islam: Islam spread to many areas under Umar Tall’s control.

2. Creation of an empire: It led to the establishment of the Tukulor Empire.

3. Growth of Tijaniyya influence: The jihad increased the political and religious influence of the Tijaniyya brotherhood.

4. changes: Several existing states were defeated or brought under Umar Tall’s authority.

5. Promotion of Islamic education: Scholars and Islamic teachers gained greater influence.

6. Resistance to European expansion: Umar Tall’s empire became one of the major forces opposing French expansion in the region.

7. New political relationships: The jihad changed the balance of power among the states and communities of the western Sudan.

Conclusion

Alhaji Umar Tall was one of the most influential Islamic leaders of 19th-century West Africa. His association with the Tijaniyya brotherhood provided him with religious influence and a large following. Through his jihad and military campaigns, he established the Tukulor Empire, which became a major Islamic state in the western Sudan. Although the empire eventually declined under internal pressures and French expansion, Umar Tall’s activities had a lasting impact on the political and religious history of West Africa.
