CONTENT
INTRODUCTION
Human trafficking is a serious social problem in which people are recruited, transported, transferred, or received through improper means for the purpose of exploitation. It can involve forced labour, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, and other forms of abuse.
In Nigeria, the government and several organizations have introduced laws, programmes and public-awareness campaigns to prevent human trafficking, protect victims and prosecute traffickers.
MEANING OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Human trafficking is the illegal recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons through means such as force, threats, deception or abuse of vulnerability for the purpose of exploitation.
GOVERNMENT EFFORTS IN COMBATING HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Enactment of Laws
The Nigerian government enacted laws to criminalize human trafficking and punish offenders. The Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act provides a legal framework for preventing trafficking, protecting victims and prosecuting traffickers.
Establishment of NAPTIP
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) was established to coordinate efforts against human trafficking.
Its activities include:
a) Investigating and prosecuting suspected traffickers.
b) Rescuing and protecting victims.
c) Creating awareness about trafficking.
d) Providing rehabilitation and support services for victims.
e) Working with other agencies and organizations to prevent trafficking.
Public Enlightenment
Government agencies organize campaigns through schools, television, radio, social media and community programmes to educate people about the dangers of trafficking and deceptive recruitment.
Border and Immigration Control
Government agencies, including immigration authorities, monitor borders and investigate suspicious movements to prevent traffickers from transporting victims across national borders.
Rehabilitation of Victims
Government provides support to rescued victims through temporary accommodation, counselling, medical care, education, skills acquisition and reintegration into society.
Prosecution of Traffickers
Law-enforcement agencies investigate trafficking cases and take suspected offenders through the legal process. Punishment of offenders helps to discourage others from engaging in the crime.
EFFORTS OF ORGANIZATIONS
WOTCLEF
