Lesson Note
A. Meaning of Historical Skills
Historical skills are the abilities and methods used by historians to discover, examine, interpret, and present information about past events. These skills help historians determine what happened in the past and explain why and how events occurred.
Examples of historical skills include:
*Observation
*Collection of information
*Analysis
*Comparison
*Interpretation
*Chronology
*Critical thinking
*Evaluation of sources
*Ancient Approach to History
B. ANCIENT APPROACH TO HISTORY
The ancient approach refers to the methods used by early historians to study and record the past. Ancient historians depended largely on oral traditions, personal observations, traditions, myths, legends, inscriptions and available written records.
Features of the Ancient Approach
1. Oral tradition: Information was passed from one generation to another by word of mouth.
2. Use of myths and legends: Stories about heroes, kings and important events were preserved through legends.
3. Reliance on eyewitnesses: Historians often depended on people who had witnessed events.
4. Limited written records: Writing materials and record-keeping systems were not widely available.
5. Religious influence: Some historical accounts were strongly influenced by religious beliefs.
6. Emphasis on rulers and wars: Ancient historians often recorded the activities of kings, kingdoms, wars and important personalities.
7. Limited criticism of sources: Information was not always subjected to systematic verification.
Advantages of the Ancient Approach
1. It helped preserve the history of societies without written records.
2. It protected important traditions and cultural practices.
3. It provided information about ancient kingdoms and rulers.
4. It helped later historians understand early societies.
Limitations
1. Oral information could be forgotten or changed over time.
2. Myths and legends could be mixed with facts.
3. Personal bias could influence historical accounts.
4. Some events were exaggerated.
5. There were few methods for systematically checking the accuracy of information.
C. Modern Approach to History
The modern approach is the systematic and scientific method used by historians to investigate and explain the past. Modern historians make use of different types of sources, research methods, technology and critical examination.
Features of the Modern Approach
1. Use of different sources: Historians use written, oral, archaeological, audio-visual and material sources.
2. Source criticism: Sources are carefully examined to determine their reliability.
3. Chronological arrangement: Events are arranged according to the time they occurred.
4. Objectivity: Historians try to reduce personal bias.
5. Archaeological research: Archaeological evidence is used to investigate societies that left few written records.
6. Use of technology: Computers, digital archives, photography and other technologies assist historical research.
7. Comparison of evidence: Information from different sources is compared before conclusions are reached.
8. Interdisciplinary approach: History makes use of knowledge from geography, economics, sociology, archaeology, political science and other disciplines.
Advantages of the Modern Approach
1. It makes historical research more systematic.
2. It improves the accuracy of historical accounts.
3. Different sources can be compared and verified.
4. Archaeological evidence can supplement written records.
5. Technology makes it easier to preserve and access historical materials.
6. It gives attention to ordinary people and social, economic and cultural developments, not only kings and wars.
D. Difference Between Ancient and Modern Approaches
| Ancient Approach | Modern Approach |
|---|---|
| Relied heavily on oral tradition and legends. | Uses a wide range of evidence. |
| Sources were often not systematically tested. | Sources are critically examined. |
| Religious beliefs often influenced accounts. | Historians aim for objectivity. |
| Mainly focused on rulers, wars and important persons | Covers political, social, economic and cultural history. |
| Had limited technological assistance. | Makes extensive use of modern technology. |
| Information could easily be altered through oral transmission | Evidence can be compared and verified. |
E. Importance of Historical Skills
Historical skills enable students and historians to:
1. Understand events of the past.
2. Distinguish facts from opinions.
3. Evaluate the reliability of historical sources.
4. Arrange events in their correct sequence.
5. Understand causes and effects of historical events.
6. Develop critical-thinking skills.
7. Appreciate the history and culture of their society.
8. Learn lessons from past events.
Conclusion
The ancient and modern approaches have both contributed to the study of history. While the ancient approach depended greatly on oral traditions, eyewitness accounts and available records, the modern approach uses critical analysis, multiple sources, scientific investigation and technology. A good historian should therefore examine evidence carefully before accepting a historical claim as reliable.
